Overview
If you do business in California, sales tax can get confusing fast. Here's a quick breakdown of the basics.
Who administers it
California sales tax is administered by the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration, also called the CDTFA.
State and local rates
The WGA page lists California's statewide base sales tax rate as 7.25%. Local and district taxes can stack on top and are generally based on the delivery address.
Economic nexus
Nexus means a business may have enough connection to a state that its sales tax responsibility should be reviewed. For remote sellers, the WGA page lists California's economic nexus threshold as $500,000 in sales.
Filing frequency
The WGA page notes that California filing is quarterly by default, with prepayments at higher volumes. The practical goal is to know the assigned cadence and keep collected tax reconciled.
What to watch for
The WGA page flags two areas to watch. District taxes can stack on top of the base rate, and some California business obligations may need to be reviewed separately from the normal sales tax return.
