Overview
If you do business in New York, sales tax can get confusing fast. Here's a quick breakdown of the basics.
Who administers it
New York sales tax is administered by the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance.
State and local rates
The WGA page lists New York's statewide base sales tax rate as 4%. Local rates can stack on top and are generally based on the delivery address.
Economic nexus
Nexus means a business may have enough connection to a state that its sales tax responsibility should be reviewed. For remote sellers, the WGA page lists New York's economic nexus threshold as $500,000 in sales and 100 transactions.
Filing frequency
The WGA page notes that filing is quarterly, with monthly filing for larger vendors. The practical goal is to know the assigned schedule and keep collected tax matched to it.
What to watch for
One New York watch-out: both thresholds must be met. Local rates add roughly 4.5 points, and New York City has its own additional taxes and filings.
